I’m in Maine! We’re having a wonderful week of painting, fellowship, feasting and fun. My mother and I left home last Thursday with a loaded van and two friends who were joining us for the week.
That’s Cathy, me, my mother Saundra, and Candy, ready for a r-e-a-l-ly long drive. It’s 16 hours from my home in Prosperity to Owls Head, Maine.
But don’t feel too sorry for us, because we had plenty of fun along the way. On day 2, driving along the New Hampshire coast, we got our first glimpse of the Atlantic.
Then it was on to Maine….here we are sketching at our B&B in Damariscotta.
Here’s mine…
Saturday morning we were up bright and early to capture the morning light at Pemaquid Point, near New Harbor. I think it’s one of the prettiest lighthouses in Maine.
Here’s the travel set-up I used to do my sketch. There’s a Coroplast board with sketchbook and palette clamped to it with binder clips, and a water container fastened with magnetic tape.
We finally made it to our rental in Owls Head Saturday afternoon – just look at the setting! How perfect is that?

Here’s the view from our yard at low tide.
At high tide, the waves are crashing on the rocks just steps from our door. It’s awesome!!!
Now, this is what I call a classroom!
We have plenty of space inside, too. Here’s the gang practicing techniques for painting evergreen trees…

Tomorrow I’ll take some pictures of a few of the sketches we’ve done so far. I thought you might enjoy seeing what we’ve been painting – but it’s awfully hard to make myself spend time on the computer when I’m in a place as wonderful as this. We’ve all agreed that we would be perfectly content not venturing beyond the far end of Crescent Beach for the entire week. It’s a little piece of heaven.

I feel like an armchair participant – thank you for the tour – sure wish I was there with you all! I loved seeing your journal paintings and I'm looking forward to seeing more photos of sketches from your trip!

Leslie, what size Coroplast board do you use? I wasn't familiar with this product, but I looked it up and I'm wondering if something like a dry erase board would work as well? Or maybe, with its corrugated nature, the Coroplast would be lighter in the field? Any thoughts on this? I ask because it looks like single sheets of Coroplast are hard to come by (lots of multi-packs on Amazon), so I was trying to think of a substitute.
Mine is 11×14. I cut it to a size that would fit down in my backpack that I carry when I go out sketching. I get Coroplast at Lowe's, in the yard sign section. They have blank sheets of it, as well as For Sale, Yard Sale, etc. It's nice because it's so lightweight yet rigid.
