Our granddaughter, Isabelle, loves to fish with Grandpa, and she seems to have a knack for it. For her birthday, we got her a kid-sized fishing vest and loaded it with fishing gear, so she’s now ready for her first outing of the spring. When she donned her funky new bucket hat and polarized sunglasses, she looked so cute; I knew it would make a great sketch.
I drew this one evening from a photo on my phone when I had to wait for my grandson at an event that he was participating in. I sat up in the bleachers in the high school gym with a pencil, pen, and my little QOR watercolor set, working away, in my own little world until he was finished. It was a lot better than scrolling my phone for two hours.
I’ve been learning something with every one of the pages I’m doing this month, and the lesson for me with this page is to JUST DO IT.
Even though it doesn’t look exactly like Isabelle, and I was frustrated trying to work with the water brush in less than ideal conditions, it’s better than not doing a sketch at all. It captures a moment in my life, and now I’ll always remember it. All it took was a commitment to taking my art supplies along with me and taking advantage of a chunk of time which would otherwise be simply frittered away and wasted.
I’d love to hear what strategies you use to fit sketching into your day. Simply comment below to add to the conversation.

!sabelle is lucky to have you as a grandma..I love the sketch.. and i’ll bet she and Fred had a great time fishing!! Miss you! xoxo
I really appreciate your attitude of JUST DO IT!
you captured an important moment in life. My sketch book if full of “not quite what I was hoping for” sketches that bring a smile when I look back at them.
They both had fun fishing, and the older kids even got into it, too. They didn’t catch much but had a good time.
Thanks I needed this reminder. Just do It.
