I loved doing my sketch for May 6th. It was inspired by a color exercise I saw on Pinterest, but I took the idea and interpreted it in my own way using watercolors.
I’ve realized I love color and pattern. This sketch has both, so it made me very happy when I was working on it. It’s cheery, isn’t it?
It feels good to give myself permission to just mess around in my sketchbook instead of feeling obligated to finish up a travel journal, write a blog post, or work on something more “important”.
This is important, too.
Day 7 – I have a carousel in my studio that holds paint brushes, pens, rulers, scissors, etc. When I wasn’t inspired to draw anything more picturesque on May 7th, I drew what was in front of me using an Elegant Writer pen.
I really enjoyed drawing with the Elegant Writer water-soluble pen. After the line drawing was done, I used a wet brush to touch the lines and drag the ink to create shadows. The border was added using a Copic Multiliner, size 0.7.
Have you tried the Elegant Writer pens? They are felt-tip calligraphy pens with a broad nib, but I mostly use the corner of the nib to get a finer line. Depending on the angle at which you hold the pen, you can get a range of line widths. The ink bleeds black and grey with hints of green and pink.
If you haven’t tried them, why not pick one up and give it a try? They offer a quick and easy way to fill a sketchbook page with a drawing that has rich, juicy washes and a wide range of values.

The circles would be so fun to do with the kids! They love using lots of color and this would be perfect for them. 🙂
I’ve ordered the Elegant Writers….it looks like something very useful and another fun thing to try!
I have other brands, but the Elegant Writer has amazing properties worth trying!
Thanks, Leslie!
See you soon!
