It seems I sketch a lot faster than I can write blog posts. It’s been tough keeping up with sketching every day AND posting about the sketches, but I’ll share them all eventually.
Now for Day 12…
My sister, Donni, loves to cook, and she traditionally hosts a big Mother’s Day dinner for the whole family every year. This year was no exception, and, as usual, it was scrumptious!
Since I’m sketching every day in May, I thought I would document all the deliciousness in my sketchbook, so I took pictures of everything during lunch and sketched it later.
First came the appetizers: Donnni’s famous crab dip and a new recipe which was having a trial run, French Quarter Dip. Plus crackers and chips for dipping.
The main course was Shoyu Chicken, a teriyaki chicken recipe I got from a friend during my college days. It’s been a family favorite since the 1970s.
Gourmet potatoes are a decadent concoction that includes potatoes, sour cream, cheese, and green onions. Needless to say, they’re a caloric splurge that only happens a couple of times a year, but, boy, are they good!
Scalloped pineapple is another old family favorite. It’s a sort of bread pudding made from chopped pineapple, eggs, sugar, and bread. Another splurge…
Notice, though, how my plate was balanced with fresh veggies! Homegrown sweet corn from the freezer plus garden-fresh asparagus picked that morning. And a nice fresh fruit salad to fill in any empty spots in our tum mies.
The grandkids each had several of Donni’s fresh homemade rolls and jam.
When dessert time rolled around, we had not one, not two, but four choices: peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and almond shortbread cookies (all gluten-free!)…
plus everyone’s favorite, Strawberry Jello Pretzel Salad!
It’s an irresistible blend of fruity, creamy, crunchy, sweet, and salty, but it’s so far from being an actual salad that I felt obligated to put the word “salad” in quotes in my sketch.
I sketched out this page during our two-hour drive home. It was a little rough doing the pencil sketch in the car, but at least I got things in place on the page. I fine-tuned the drawings later at home, then inked them and painted everything. I used a Copic Multiliner, size 0.2, for the drawing. It’s a new tool for me, and I like it. The tip seems durable and I like the fine line it gives.
I’m glad I finally made time to document one of Donni’s yummy family dinners. She loves us with food, and we love her right back by eating and enjoying it!

Looks delish! What a wonderful time with family and a tasty feast. The love and good memories are evident in your beautiful art. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I love sketching food, especially when it’s a quick sketch without too many details. It’s such a great way to capture memories. Glad you enjoyed this one.
Oh My God I drooled all over this post. Lucky you! It would take me a month to create
The beauty of this post and it would not do justice to your work.
Thanks, Karen! I appreciate your sweet comment. It’s nice to know someone’s reading and enjoying my posts.
So fun ! Happy Mother’s Day Leslie and to your Mom also. I love your sketches but the first thought I had was to ask for the recipes but I know that is not what we are doing here. That strawberry desert looked really good ( as did everything). Thank you for sharing.
I can email them to you, Joan. I think I already have most of them typed up. I guess that was kind of mean of me to post the sketch without including the recipes!
OMG not only are the sketches wonderful but the food has me drooling. I’ll need to look up the chicken recipe.
Drop me an email and I’ll be happy to send it to you.
Thank you Leslie. I looked up the recipe and it is very familiar to one I already make.
